The Community College of Philadelphia seeks its next Dean of Students. The Dean of Students reports to the Vice President for Academic and Student Success and provides oversight and supervision for seven direct reports and a total staff of 56. The Dean is responsible for creating a supportive, transformational, welcoming, safe, and inclusive community for all students and serves as the chief judicial affairs officer. The Dean works closely with individual students and student organizations, advocates for students’ needs and perspectives, and provides strategic leadership for the co-curricular experience.
The new Dean will provide leadership, strategic direction, assessment, and management of programs and services that enhance the overall quality of student life and student success, including development and retention, at the Main Campus and Regional Centers. The Dean of Students is directly responsible for Athletics and Athletics Center, Counseling, Discipline and Student Judicial Affairs, grant-funded initiatives, Student Activities, the Student Life Center, the Center for Male Engagement, the Women’s Outreach and Advocacy Center, the Office of Collegiate Recovery as well as student leadership development, orientation, and retention programs.
It will be critical that the new Dean create an inclusive, interconnected vision of student services within the Dean’s area supporting the overall educational experience of students at the College and its mission and commitment to students and advance this vision. S/he will as the principal investigator for sensitive and complex student complaints, including those under the purview of Title IX and related laws pertaining to campus safety and sexual misconduct in collaboration with the Diversity Compliance Office/Title IX Coordinator and will facilitate related education, training, and outreach programming for students. Success in this role requires demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion; experience creating a campus culture that promotes a sense of belonging for all students; and the ability to engage productively with individuals representing a broad range of backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences. The Dean will work effectively with enrollment management in coordinating student-centered events and services like orientation, international student services, and veterans’ services that promote student success and a smooth transition through the College’s enrollment, graduation, career, and transfer processes. The College launched the strategic plan Impact 2025: An Uncompromising Focus on Student Success in 2017. The Dean will foster the continued implementation of this plan and collaborate with campus constituencies to develop, integrate, and improve policies, programs, and services aimed at supporting student learning, satisfaction, and success, including integrating student life with academic programs.
Community College of Philadelphia is a public, open-admission institution that provides both academic resources and support services to help students achieve their academic goals. As the largest public institution of higher education in Philadelphia, the College has served more than 685,000 of the city’s residents since 1965. Community College of Philadelphia offers more than 75 associate degree, academic and proficiency certificate programs. Recent graduates continue to strengthen Philadelphia’s local economy and workforce. The College enables students to embark on a smart path to a bachelor’s degree program, with transfer agreements and partnerships to assist in the transition. Overall, 69% are enrolled in transfer or liberal arts programs; 20% enrolled in career programs; 11% enrolled in noncredit, continuing education coursework. More than half (54%) of the student body at CCP are 24 or younger, and the median age is 23. There are more women (66%) than men, and approximately 72% are minority students represented as 41% African American, 23% White, 16% Hispanic/Latino, 11% Asian/Pacific Islander, 4% Other/Unknown, 3% Two or More Races, and 2% Non-resident Alien.
The Dean of Students must possess a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, preferably in higher education administration, counseling, or psychology. A doctorate degree is preferred. Required is senior level administrative experience in higher education, with preference for that experience to be in a community college. The Dean must show demonstrated experience with staff supervision, including performance management and employee development, as well as management of office functions including budget and policy development. Additionally, strong leadership and management skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate purposefully and effectively with faculty, staff, students, and other constituencies in positive and inclusive ways are also required.
Other requirements include:
- Demonstrated record of administration including assessment, strategic planning, goal setting and the ability to manage systemic change.
- Experience in integrating and using technology in the delivery and assessment of programs, services and activities, as well as using technology as a tool for collecting, analyzing and reporting data.
- Demonstrated experience in the planning, implementation and assessment of comprehensive programs and services to students leading to improved student engagement and persistence
- Demonstrated sensitivity, creativity, and effectiveness in responding to challenging student and college community issues, preferably in an urban setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of laws, regulations and policies governing student conduct and discipline, student privacy, student health, and plagiarism as well as working knowledge of Title IX.
- Extensive knowledge of current issues, trends, and research in the areas of student development and persistence as well as leadership development, and experience in the application of conflict resolution and crisis management techniques.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community along with high standards of integrity, credibility, reliability, and confidentiality.
- Demonstrated excellent organizational, time management, presentation, and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, both as team leader and participant.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the Internet.
- Knowledge and appreciation of community college mission, and a commitment to a student success agenda.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity in all its forms, including a track record of individual action and institutional leadership.
Preferred qualifications include:
- Experience in student life, counseling, college teaching or other comparable non-campus-based experience.
- Familiarity with enterprise-wide software, preferably with Banner.
- Experience in, and appreciation for, a collective bargaining environment.
