California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President for University Advancement (VPUA). Founded in 2002, CSUCI is the newest campus in the 23-campus California State University System. The next VPUA will be expected to help lead the institution through its third decade, promoting its maturation into the next phase of its development in a number of areas, such as supporting student-centered co-curricular and curricular engagement and continuing to embed the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the Division’s work to support the University’s ongoing efforts to advance racial and social justice.
The Vice President for University Advancement oversees and guides the entire range of community and university relationships pertaining to Fundraising and Development activities, Career Development, Alumni Engagement, and University events. The successful candidate for the VPUA position will be an effective and emotionally intelligent team-builder and a visionary leader with the proven ability to implement leading-edge programs and systems within a growing public university.
California State University Channel Islands: With an operating budget of roughly $140 million, CSUCI enrolls approximately 6,943 students, including 239 graduate and post-baccalaureate students (Fall 2020). At full capacity, CSUCI is expected to eventually serve 15,000 full-time equivalent students. CSUCI offers 26 undergraduate majors, seven graduate degrees, and a number of credential and certificate programs. Students have access to highly engaging curricular and co-curricular learning experiences, with outstanding faculty and staff, small class sizes, innovative applications of instructional technologies in their in-person, online, and hybrid classes, and other high-impact learning practices including service learning, undergraduate research, and study abroad opportunities in 20 countries. CSUCI has earned national distinctions because of its faculty, work environment, community service, student/faculty research, and efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. The University has been recognized four times by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a “Great College to Work For.” U.S News & World Report recently ranked CSUCI 41st for Regional Universities West, overall – and at 20th for Top Public Schools in that category and 17th for Social Mobility. CSUCI is located 4.5 miles south of the city of Camarillo in Ventura County, roughly 50 miles north of Los Angeles. As a regional campus in the CSU system, CSUCI serves all of Ventura County and the southern part of Santa Barbara County — a region that enjoys a rich mix of ethnic diversity. The local economy relies on six key industry sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, health services, professional/scientific/technical services, and leisure/hospitality.
The Vice President for University Advancement: The Vice President for University Advancement oversees and guides the entire range of community and university relationships pertaining to fundraising and development activities of the University. Acting under the direction of the President, the Vice President for University Advancement plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates CSUCI’s fundraising and alumni activities and develops and leads a comprehensive Advancement office that includes Development, University Events, Career Development & Alumni Engagement, Advancement Services & Operations, and other fundraising programs. As the chief fundraising officer, the Vice President for University Advancement will identify partners, supporters, and donors, develop resources, raise funds, and provide effective representation for CSUCI its programs, initiatives, alumni, faculty, students, and its overall mission. The position also oversees University Events and the unit’s support of internal and external campus events, including Commencement as the hallmark event for campus. Serving as a champion of an inclusive and equitable community, the VPUA supports the highest quality learning environment in support of student success and equitable educational opportunities.
The next Vice President for University Advancement of CSUCI will exemplify collaborative leadership through the use of data, theoretical foundations, research, and best practices; exceptional interpersonal and communication dynamics; cognitive flexibility; and willingness and ability to effectively engage with students, faculty, and staff in various settings and contexts. Toward these ends, the ideal candidate would possess:
- Minimum of five years of successful experience relevant to this position.
- A proven record of substantial fund-raising success in major planned gifts, corporate gifts, and particularly in successful personal solicitations. Must have experience in planning an institution’s overall fund-raising program including capital campaign experience.
- Managerial experience in organizations involved in education, research, healthcare, the arts and humanities, or the community; knowledge of and the ability to communicate effectively and passionately about higher education with the ability to interact effectively with diverse communities.
- Ability to deal effectively with business, professional, and community leaders and experience working with leadership in volunteer boards, and with major donors from corporations, foundations, and alumni populations; and broad knowledge of the philanthropic community and the technological tools, resources, and best practices.
- Demonstrate the ability to work closely and effectively with faculty, and Academic Affairs in particular, at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to solicit major gifts personally; must possess dynamic leadership with demonstrated ability to work successfully as a strategic partner in campus- based and external community teams; must demonstrate the capacity to build and nurture relationships, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with all levels of the University’s senior management, faculty, students, staff, members of the community, and constituents of collaborative institutions. Must possess the highest levels of professionalism, impeccable integrity, and dedication and exhibit a strong commitment to public higher education and a demonstrated commitment to diversity.
- Possess strong critical thinking skills and innovative and entrepreneurial approaches toward problem solving.
- Demonstrated strong abilities in written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and creative problem solving.
