SUNY Oneonta invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the Dean of Graduate Studies (Dean). Reporting to the Provost, this Dean will join SUNY Oneonta at a time of growth and development, as it embarks on the creation of a new School of Graduate Studies, with an ambitious agenda supporting the high-quality graduate programs already offered and developing new graduate programs that meet local, regional, and statewide needs. Founded in 1889, SUNY Oneonta is a regional, comprehensive university located in central New York State. Part of the network of 64 campuses that make up the State University of New York System, the University enrolls about 6,000 students who pursue bachelor’s or master’s degrees or certificates in one of 60-plus academic programs. Located in Central New York, Oneonta is a city of approximately 14,000 residents that is nestled in the northern foothills of the Catskill Mountains—about a four-hour drive from New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia.
The Dean of Graduate Studies will play an integral role in developing the new School of Graduate Studies and will provide leadership and coordination for the staff and operations within the School. Working collaboratively with the Academic Deans, the new Dean will support graduate education at the University, serve as an advocate for the graduate programs across the institution, enhance and expand the University’s existing programs, and extend the reach and brand of the University by leveraging existing external partnerships to bring educational opportunities to a diverse community of learners. As the operations leader of the School, the Dean will provide guidance on instructional strategies to deliver traditional, online, and hybrid coursework; represent the interest of the University and the constituents we serve; and link the work of the School with the needs of the wider community.
Graduate programs are housed within the three academic schools and enroll more than 570 students across all programs. The School of Liberal Arts and Business (SLAB) brings together strong majors in the fine and performing arts, the humanities, plus select social sciences and professional programs. The School of Education, Human Ecology, and Sports Studies offers vibrant, nationally accredited programs with an emphasis on practical experience. The School of Sciences includes graduate programs in Museum Studies, Lake Management, and Biology.
