St. Mary’s University seeks nominations, expressions of interest and applications in the search for its 14th president to lead this historic institution with a vision of academic excellence for the common good. Founded in 1852, St. Mary’s was the first institution of higher learning in the dynamic city of San Antonio, Texas, and is the oldest Catholic university in the Southwest. It enrolls more than 3,300 students in 75 programs, including doctoral and law programs. In 2013, the University reaffirmed its identity as a Catholic and Marianist liberal arts institution, with the goal of being one of the finest private universities in the region. St. Mary’s serves as a gateway for graduates to their professional lives as ethical leaders in Texas, the nation and the world.
St. Mary’s University is located on a 135-acre campus in northwest San Antonio, the seventh-largest city in the U.S. and the second-largest city in Texas, with nearly 1.5 million residents. The campus offers a blend of historic beauty and modern facilities. With an 11-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio, students receive personalized attention from dedicated faculty. The four academic units of the University are the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; the Greehey School of Business; the School of Science, Engineering and Technology; and the School of Law.
The next president of St. Mary’s University will join a community proud of its success and eager to write the next chapter. The institution has earned a strong reputation for student access and success, as well as a deep sense of community. The University’s designation by the U.S. Department of Education as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and the Carnegie Foundation’s designation as a Community Engagement institution are powerful examples of how St. Mary’s fulfills its Catholic mission and Marianist values in service to its students, the San Antonio community and beyond.
The University has experienced remarkable success in building philanthropic support. The next president will build on this foundation by articulating and working toward a next-generation vision for St. Mary’s and furthering its fundraising success in support of that vision. The next president will be a practicing Catholic with an earned terminal degree; a demonstrated track record of successful organizational leadership at the senior level; and an expressed willingness to embrace and advance the St. Mary’s core Marianist values.
