The United States Merchant Marine Academy invites applications for the position of Provost. Located along the scenic north shore of Long Island in Kings Point, NY, The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) is one of the Nation’s five Federal Service Academies. The Academy educates and graduates leaders of exemplary character who serve the economic and national security interests of the United States as merchant marine officers and commissioned officers in the U.S. armed forces. The new Provost is projected to take office in Summer 2025.
Reporting directly to the Academy’s Superintendent, the Provost is directly responsible for the development of top-quality scholastic programs which encourage and promote the intellectual and professional growth and physical well-being of mid-shipmen. The Provost is responsible for all facets of the academic development of midshipmen including ensuring USMMA maintains the highest level of academic quality, setting the strategic direction for the Sea Year training program, and supporting a proactive program to ensure effective communications regarding the Academy’s mission and operations. Working closely with USMMA, MARAD, and DOT leadership to manage ongoing efforts to address operational and programmatic challenges at the Academy, the Provost is responsible for several departments including the Department of Marine Engineering, the Department of Marine Transportation, the Department of Mathematics and Science, the Department of Humanities, the Academy Registrar, and the American Merchant Marine Museum.
USMMA seeks an individual who will have a profound impact on the Academy’s ability to educate and train the country’s finest young men and women to be highly qualified licensed merchant marine officers and commissioned officers in the armed forces. The successful candidate will demonstrate executive level experience as a senior administrator at the college or university level and executive level experience establishing communications and relationships among diverse institutional entities.
