Teachers College, Columbia University (TC) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its next General Counsel. The General Counsel will be a key member of President Thomas Bailey’s executive leadership team, and will provide direct counseling and legal services to the Board of Trustees and senior leaders of TC and manage all legal services for TC. The new General Counsel is expected to assume office during spring or summer of 2022.
The College is a vital and integrated part of the Morningside Heights section of New York City and enrolls approximately 6,000 graduate students. TC offers more than 100 programs in its four core areas of expertise — education, health, psychology, and leadership — and conducts diverse research on topics. Academic programs are delivered through 10 departments: Arts & Humanities, Biobehavioral Sciences, Counseling & Clinical Psychology, Curriculum & Teaching, Education Policy & Social Analysis, Health & Behavior Studies, Human Development, International & Transcultural Studies, Mathematics, Science & Technology, and Organization & Leadership.
Reporting directly to the President, the General Counsel is the chief legal officer of TC and is a key member of the President’s Cabinet, contributing to the resolution of many of the most important issues that affect TC. The General Counsel also provides direct advice and counsel to the Board of Trustees on legal issues, governance, and related topics. The General Counsel will manage the Office of the General Counsel and provide day-to-day legal counsel on issues, policies, technology, contracts, transactions, claims, litigations, proceedings, and risks that concern TC, the Trustees, President, Vice Presidents, other senior leaders, administrators, faculty, and staff.
